Surface Flaw Detection

FlawSense is a high-speed laser-based measurement and defect detection system used for continuous monitoring of critical product dimensions, regardless of product orientation. Achieving 360° coverage, FlawSense can detect lumps, gels, pits, slits, and other surface defects that conventional laser micrometers and camera-based systems cannot.

With FlawSense, defects can be detected in-process and reviewed later in 3D using the FlawSense defect viewer. FlawSense is the ideal flaw detection solution for high-performance, critical-compliance applications, such as: hose, tube, pipe, and cable.

FlawSense contains multiple laser emitters and laser sensors. Laser light is projected onto a measurement target and reflected into each sensor. Each laser sensor triangulates the depth of the measurement target based on where the reflected light hits each sensor.

The sensors create data points based on this return light, together resulting in a complete profile of the measurement target that can be measured or analyzed for flaws. Each generated profile represents a true 360° view of the measurement target, allowing for orientation-independent measurement and robust defect detection.

Unlike conventional camera-based measurement technologies, FlawSense is not influenced by changes in environmental lighting conditions nor by visual patterns on the measurement target. The laser sensors used in each FlawSense measurement head are designed such that only light of a certain wavelength and intensity is detectable by the sensors, allowing for a stable measurement environment amidst fluctuating ambient conditions.
